According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the Brazilian butt lift procedure is one of the hottest and fastest-growing cosmetic surgeries in America. According to the ASPS, this popularity is directly linked to the desire by millennials to look hot on Instagram and other social media platforms. Brazilian but lift is a surgical procedure involving the transfer of body fat from one part of the body to the buttocks to appear full and more curvaceous.

Most women are going for this procedure with the hope of looking like their favorite female celebrities. Medical experts say the extensive media coverage of the huge buttocks of some female celebrities like Nicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian has contributed immensely to the procedure’s dramatic rise in popularity. But where did the Brazilian butt lift idea come from? Continue reading to learn the history of this coveted cosmetic procedure.

Who Discovered Brazilian Butt Lift?

Although many plastic surgeons had previously tried to graft fat to the buttocks, the one who succeeded in this endeavor was Dr. Ivo Pitanguy – a renowned Brazilian plastic surgeon and author. Dr. Pitanguy is possibly the most celebrated plastic surgeon in Brazil and has contributed immensely to cosmetic surgery.

He was born in 1923 in Brazil and died in 2016, a day after carrying the Olympic flame across Rio de Janeiro. Before his demise, Dr. Pitanguy owned an island in Brazil where he performed most of his plastic surgeries. Before discovering the Brazilian butt lift procedure, Pitanguy had tried several other surgical techniques to rectify buttock ptosis or droop. But it was not until the early 1980s that he succeeded in grafting fat to the butt. Since then, the procedure has gained worldwide acceptance to the point of becoming one of the most sought-after plastic surgeries in many parts of the world.

Apart from performing the Brazilian butt lift procedure, Dr. Pitanguy was also celebrated for making it possible for poor people to fix their deformities and physical abnormalities through plastic surgery. He offered free treatment to the poor people in the country and trained other surgeons at his clinic – Clínica Ivo Pitanguy – in Rio de Janeiro. In his practice, Pitanguy operated on many renowned celebrities and influential people all over the world, including the former F1 race driver Niki Lauda and the former Italian Prime Minister and media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi.
